Murmur of the Heart (1971)
Murmur of the Heart (1971) is a French-Italian coming-of-age drama directed by Louis Malle. The film follows the story of Laurent, a 15-year-old boy who is struggling to find his place in the world. As he navigates his way through adolescence, he experiences a variety of sexual moments that are both awkward and enlightening.
The film begins with Laurent's mother taking him to a doctor for a medical check-up. During the examination, the doctor discovers that Laurent has a heart murmur and prescribes him medication. As the doctor leaves, Laurent's mother reveals to him that she had an affair with the doctor. This revelation sets the tone for the rest of the film, as Laurent begins to explore his own sexuality.
The next sexual moment comes when Laurent meets Clara, a young woman who works in his father's store. The two quickly become close and eventually share a passionate kiss. This is the first time Laurent has experienced physical intimacy and it leaves him feeling both excited and scared.
The most significant sexual moment in the film comes when Laurent's mother takes him to a brothel. Here, Laurent is exposed to a variety of sexual activities and is even encouraged to participate. Although he is initially hesitant, Laurent eventually gives in and has sex with one of the prostitutes. This experience is both liberating and confusing for Laurent, as he is still trying to make sense of his own sexuality.
